Hammond, from 1896-1903 Contains exact transcripts of the medical examinations performed by Dr. Thomas Hammond in his role as medical evaluator of Florida Veterans applying for Civil War pensions from the State of Florida. Medical ailments were described in great detail and the Dr. Hammond made notes specifically recommending further financial assistance in some cases.

One of the forgotten legacies of the Civil War was a special census of eastern Florida conducted on the orders of Federal military authorities. Its motivation is to this day unclear, but it seems likely to have been done to help register voters. African-Americans living in the region were also enumerated despite the fact that they did not yet have the legal right to vote. This is an excellent publication for anyone interested in research in Florida, particularly for Civil War era and African-American history.
