"Before They Were States: Finding and Using Territorial Records"

Nov 20, 2013 8:00 PM EST

Please register at:

Thirty three of the states making up the modern United States were U.S. Territories prior to achieving statehood. Our ancestors living in those territories generated huge numbers of records that are not typically found in the traditional records sources used by genealogists. This presentation provides examples of the wide variety of records available and reviews four major sources for finding these records.

Jack Butler is a professional genealogist, lecturer, author and owner of the genealogy firm, Southern Heir Ways. Active in serious genealogical research for more than 15 years, Jack is also active in the genealogy community. He holds memberships in the Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society, the New England Historical Genealogical Society, and the Florida State Genealogical Society, where he is the immediate past President..

Jack also participates in the Genealogical Speaker’s Guild and the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors. As part of his professional development, Jack has completed the National Genealogical Society’s American Genealogy course, the Advanced Methodology Course at Samford University’s Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research, and the National Institute of Genealogy Research at the National Archives course.

Genealogically, Jack is most at home among the records of the Southeastern United States, but he has also done extensive research in New England and the United Kingdom, and lesser projects have taken him into Canada and as far afield as Sicily. VIsit Jack’s website at www.shwgenealogy.com.
